LoveReading View on The Treasure at the Top of the World Exciting adventure on the slopes of Mount Everest December 2018 Debut of the Month | Shortlisted for the Peoples Book Prize 2019 All the best adventures start with a map and there s a corker in Clive Mantle s new thriller. Freddie s Uncle Patrick gives him a huge and beautiful antique map of the world as a birthday present, little suspecting or does he? that it will magically transport Freddie across the continents and through time, to the Himalayas. He shares the adventures that befall him there with his best friend Connor, who has his own challenges at home with a gang of bullies. The two plotlines connect and this is thoroughly satisfying edge-of-the-seat boys-own stuff. --Toppsta
1st October 2018 I read it to Alex aged 10 This is an amazing book. Alex and I decided that we would read a chapter a night - me reading to him. We haven t done this in years. It has been such a treat. The book has fabulous geographical facts, a great modern storyline, a bit of love interest and some great action scenes. Really sets you for more to come from Clive Mantle as an author. We had to read the last four chapters last night in one sitting as Alex is away on a school trip and HAD to know the ending before he went. Sign of a great book - and give that I have just gone back to work, have a manic four year old and life is full on, more credit to the book that I happily read four chapters in one go to find out what happened myself. Recommended - get this book! 14th September 2018 Tobymax read it aged 10 As twins who love the Hardy Boys and won t be deviated, they both loved this book.Fabulous adventure book that has inspired my boys to agree to more exciting holidays so watch this space! Great story line and helped encourage them on a recent scouting trip where they took it turns to ready this as all phones were banned! I read it to Brobee aged 5 & to Class 3 aged 7 to 8 We thoroughly enjoyed this time travelling adventure. It's fast paced and really exciting. The style is easy to read and absolutely captivating. We can't wait to read the next instalment in Freddie's adventures; where on Earth will he travel to next? rsa read it aged 8 We shared the reading of this book. My son enjoyed it because of it being an exciting, adventure book. It is a few steps up from the Sea Quest and Beast Quest books, thus for a slightly older, more competent reader. There was a lot to talk about with this book whilst we were reading it and after we had finally finished it. It raises some interesting issues surrounding bullying (Freddie, the central character's friend, Connor is being bullied. The bullies at the end of the book are seen having got their just deserts.) Moreover, there is an awful lot of general knowledge to talk about and take in ,mostly surrounding Everest (facts gone into more detail at the end of the book). Overall, an excellent book. I will be interested where Clive Mantle takes his characters to next time. --Toppsta
A super book which was really enjoyed by our children, we read it ourselves, and we loved it too. It reminded myself and my husband of the wonderful adventure stories which we read when we were children. As well as a wonderful central character and story, we were thrilled to see how much our children learned about Nepal and Everest and it sparked a real interest in them to read more about Nepal and the Everest expeditions. And they have. Nepal became their chosen subject for their geography projects at school and it was a novel choice, leading other children to want to discover more too. They all learned so much. Very, very happy children, Mum and Dad, and teachers. We all look forward to the second book in the series. Bravo Clive Mantle. --https://peoplesbookprize.com/winter-2018/freddie-malone-the-treasure-at-the-top-of-the-world/
Clive Mantle is a much-loved British actor, a star of both stage and screen for over 40 years. He is perhaps best known for playing Little John in Robin of Sherwood, Great Jon Umber in Game of Thrones and Mike Barratt in Casualty. His voice is also well known from his work on over 180 audio books, and voicing animated characters, including Gator in Thomas the Tank Engine. In the first of The Adventures of Freddie Malone series, The Treasure at the Top of the World Freddie receives an intriguing and unusual thirteenth birthday present from his Uncle Patrick. The ancient world map goes straight up on his wall, but Freddie fast discovers that the map is much more than just a decorative historic artefact. Freddie, and his best friend, Connor, are soon plunged into a mountainous adventure, on a path that leads to a longburied mystery, pursued by ruthless adversaries who ll go to any lengths to get what they want. Of his debut novel, Clive said, "Everest has been my passion since childhood, when my Father enthused me with its many tales. Years later, I realised a lifetime s ambition and set foot on the mountain myself, and the magnificence of the experience is with me every day. I have woven a tale of adventure in the past and present against the wondrous backdrop of Nepal and its people. I am thrilled that the story I wrote for my own son to pass on the flame has now found a wider audience, who will hopefully have their imaginations stimulated as mine was as a young boy."
