The book explores the primacy of sexuality in human life, and how relations with sex and sexuality can become distorted from what is considered 'normative'. Its reading will challenge our intellectual laziness through a confrontation with unusual, 'bizarre', and 'odd' sexual behaviors. Such behaviors almost always elicit judgmental reactions that hinder our deeper understanding of human relationships; of our relationships to ourselves, to others and to our bodies.

Using a psychoanalytic framework, and with humour, incision and clarity of thought, the book explores why this happens. It achieves this through presenting us with a series of interwoven vignettes of clinical work and life experiences, that have crucially inflected the professional development and world view of the author.

As human beings we have the responsibility to develop a much more enquiring and open mind, and to feel privileged to have access to primitive fantasies that illuminate the dynamics of minds whose contents differ from the normative. At times, as is revealed in this book, the pursuit of understanding will take us to the primitive, archaic origins of our present actions, which are sometimes intended for our own survival, in a world experienced as distant from concerns of ethics or morality. In such instances, what appears to be self-destructive - in many ways articulation of the death instinct - also secures survival.

The book connects with blooming public interest and acceptance of unusual sexual practices, as well as the backlash against those that remain unacceptable and vilified.

Review:

'Dr. Estela Welldon, the doyenne of forensic psychotherapy, has written a delightful new masterpiece. Though only one hundred and thirty-two pages long, this beautifully illustrated book serves as a mighty encapsulation of Welldon's nearly sixty-year career as a mental health practitioner. Stunningly, if provocatively, illustrated by the talented artist Ricardo Cinalli, Welldon's book investigates the forensic state of mind in which human beings act out, often ending up in painful sexual situations, rather than talking about, or thinking about, their dangerous desires or the potential consequences. This new tome builds helpfully upon Welldon's classic Mother, Madonna, Whore: The Idealization and Denigration of Motherhood and upon her many other standard works. Pleasantly, Welldon has, this autumn, published not only Sex Now Talk Later but, also, an updated version of her popular text on Sadomasochism, now published under the title Sadomasochism in Art and Politics. I recommend both books most enthusiastically as essential reading for all practitioners of the psychological arts.'-Brett Kahr, Senior Fellow at the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships, in the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology, London, and, Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Psychotherapy and Mental Health at the Centre for Child Mental Health
