Review:

* Starred Review - "Needlecraft-design talent can be found on all sides of the Atlantic, as proven by this Glasgow, Scotland, export. Rowan Yarns designer Meldrum helps readers investigate the possibilities of freeform crochet in an organized manner that few, if any, books have accomplished to date. This notion of letting fingers, yarn, and hooks go on a tangent is alien to most who grew up with the pattern-reading-and-following approach. Yet Meldrum makes it accessible to anyone, structuring the information by shapes--patchwork and squares; circles and spirals; organic patterns; openwork and lace; trims, edgings, and fillers. At the beginning is a well-worthwhile introduction to be thoroughly read; in many step-by-step photographs, it covers measuring gauge, crochet stitches and techniques, color increases and decreases, and the like. Knowledge enough to begin a freeform project without a veteran by your side. Even more encouraging are the 30 patterns with directions, from fingerless gloves and an infinity scarf to a layered brooch and granny chic top. Creativity, explored."
