On Friday, 25th, at 6 a.m., wind W. by N. blowing a gale, the vessel riding at anchor in Skate Roads near the Farn Islands with both anchors down, drove to sea, with both anchors at the bows. Set the mainsail to try to get the anchors in, but could not succeed. The ship still driving slipped both chains and wore to the south, leaking badly. Kept the pumps going. At 1 p.m. saw a smack and hoisted signal of distress, but they took no notice. At 2 a.m. saw a vessel to wind-ward, which bore down upon us and asked if we wanted assistance. Replied yes, our vessel just sinking. Attempted to launch our boat but failed, the mate getting dis-abled in the attempt. A boat was launched from the vessel and took us on board. The "Oak " sank 25 minutes later. The vessel, "The Elsie," of Findhorn, Capt. Storm, landed us at that port. When the Bk. "Judith " was in dock at W...
