Manhole Covers? Who'd a thought! They really are quite amazing; especially the old ones. First noticing the designs on the covers in England in 2000, I then began my 14 year adventure rubbing and collecting their designs throughout the U.S., Canada, England and France. In a similar way that people have done tombstone rubbings in graveyards, I use a graphite stick to capture the high points of the covers under my paper or canvas. About the Author:

I was raised in Santa Barbara, Ca. and at age 49 moved to Hanover, NH. In 1987 I created the world’s first line of Braille Jewelry. The texture on the jewelry was actually Braille and they had words, names and personalized messages. After 28 years, I have set that project aside. I am proud that one of my pieces has been placed into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
