About the Author:
Han Tran has a doctorate in Classics from UC Berkeley and is currently a lecturer at the University of Miami at Coral Gables. Her area of expertise is in classical and world myth, as well as in ancient religions. She has also previously taught at The Ohio State University and the University of Oregon. A deep interest in distilling knowledge and making it accessible to a young audience has led her to collaborate with Montessori school director, Christinia Cheung. Ms. Cheung directs a Bay Area bilingual school educating children from 3 months of age to 18 years, where she has seen first-hand a vital need for books that both treat subjects in greater depth and that are also designed with the aim of leading children to become more reflective and more aware -- of the world, of the past, and of others. The collaboration between Dr. Tran and Ms. Cheung reflects a belief in the power of storytelling as a way of engaging the mind while encouraging thoughtfulness and personal responsibility.
From the Inside Flap:
The aim of Hands-on-Prints is to make available to children, parents, and educators a wide spectrum of learning materials that are meticulously researched and a reading delight. The contents of all our books are distilled, but never diluted; while they are the result of scholarly investigation, our stories and poems are designed not only to be instructive, but also eye-opening, and to plant the seeds for further exploring. The reading levels offered range from beginning (ages three to six), intermediate (elementary school children), and advanced (middle and high-school students). For each level, we have devised various series, each covering subject areas appropriate for that specific stage of development, and encouraging the student's analytical skills through stimulating topics, novel presentation, and evocative graphic work in a range of media (including acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media) and styles (from the minutely detailed and realistic to the lyrical and painterly). We believe that visual literacy is a key ingredient in forming the mind and refining cognitive skills. We do not view illustrations as merely decorative and cosmetic, but as integral parts of the learning experience. This is the basis for our seeking out work by emerging artists from a broad spectrum of backgrounds in the arts, and working closely with them to produce books that are a feast for the mind and eye alike.
