Synopsis:

A new introduction to a complex world. There has never been so much interest in art as there is today but there has also never been so much confusion about what art is. This book surveys the whole field in an accessible, critical and entertaining manner. From cave paintings to the Venice Biennale, this book introduces the beginner to all of the complicated questions that stem from the simple idea of 'art'. Painters, theorists and philosophers are all included to show how the idea of art has developed over the last 5,000 years, and how we have reached the point we are at now. Ideal for students, beginners and practitioners alike "Art theory for beginners" delivers as it promises, a complete survey of all of the aesthetic, historical and practical questions that surround the idea of art. Illustrated with many of the most important images in the history of art it opens up the entire field and exposes how and why different schools of art developed. Written in a clear manner this unusual and unique introduction to a complicated field is perfect for A-level to postmodernist artist.
