Dust-jacket reads: John Gould was the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. His Birds of Great Britain, a series of 367 plates issued in five volumes between 1862 and 1873, which make up this collection, was the most comprehensive record of native birds at that date, and an artistic and scientific achievement which today ranks with the greatest works of Bewick or Audubon. The 'bird man', as he liked to be called, had been 'enamoured with nature, and her charming attitudes' at an early age. This romantic enthusiasm combined with scientific and artistic skills and a forceful entrepreneurial personality, led him to produce a total of almost 3,000 hand-coloured lithographs which are eagerly sought by modern collectors. Gould collected the scientific information and drew many of the rough sketches himself. These were then passed on for completion to skilled illustrators-at first his wife Elizabeth, and Edward Lear; and later such artists as Henry Richter, William Hart, and Joseph Wolf. The plates which resulted were a splendid fusion of art and science whose range and subtlety are still unsurpassed. The size of Gould's original volumes and the relatively small numbers in which they were produced, have meant that his work has hitherto been appreciated mainly by professional ornithologists and bibliophiles. Now, almost 100 years after his death, this edition of the complete Birds of Great Britain enables a wider public to see his greatest achievement.

Raven & Gryphon Fine Books
(Hackett's Cove, NS, Canada)

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. John Gould s Birds, Chartwell Books, Inc., Secaucus, NJ, 1981. John Gould FRS (1804 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species. Gould wrote and illustrated a number of books with bird illustrations including his best known work The Birds of Great Britain; 1862 73 . 5 vols. 367 plates, that is the basis for this book. This oversized volume, with 239 pages measuring 337mm X 258mm, is in near-fine condition as is the dust jacket. That is now in a protective mylar wrap. The only fault with this book and the dust jacket is a small bump at the top of the spine. A beautiful book featuring the work of one of the world s greatest bird artists, second perhaps to Audubon. This large and heavy book will require additional postage. Seller Inventory # 1921b
