Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. John Gould s Birds, Chartwell Books, Inc., Secaucus, NJ, 1981. John Gould FRS (1804 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species. Gould wrote and illustrated a number of books with bird illustrations including his best known work The Birds of Great Britain; 1862 73 . 5 vols. 367 plates, that is the basis for this book. This oversized volume, with 239 pages measuring 337mm X 258mm, is in near-fine condition as is the dust jacket. That is now in a protective mylar wrap. The only fault with this book and the dust jacket is a small bump at the top of the spine. A beautiful book featuring the work of one of the world s greatest bird artists, second perhaps to Audubon. This large and heavy book will require additional postage. Seller Inventory # 1921b
