Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Second Edition. PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. TRUE FIRST EDITION< AND A UNIQUE COPY OF A VERY RARE Civil War book published in Charleston in 1899.NOT THE MODERN REPRINT. References: Howes USIANA 544, grade aa, noting only 150 copies. Broadfoot value $1200, but his guide has the date wrong. Not in Nevins nor Eicher. The uniqueness is that this copy belonged to the Byrd family of Hartsville, Darlington County, SC, four of whom served in these units in the war. Alexander F. Byrd was killed in the war, he being the father of Samuel Byrd. On the front blank endpaper there is genealogical information penned in listing several other members of the Byrd family with birth and death dates, including Samuel. The preface by the author states that the book was conceived at a meeting held by the survivors of the units, in Hartsville, on July 24, 1885. So Broadfoot seems wrong on the date, Howes correct. As to condition: The book needs new covers, rebinding. The text is complete, paper lightly tanned with age, and several penned notes adding information. Very little foxing, very occasional light spots. Both hinges showing but holding, with binding otherwise tight. Rear blank end paper gone. The covers, which as noted need replacing, are spotted and soiled, gilt title barely visible, corners and spine ends rubbed. It is as it is. Save it! Shelved in glass Indian case.
