When you see this delightful 2'6" gauge railway you may think of it as just a little, local, preserved railway tucked away in the beautiful, rural countryside of mid-Wales. In one sense you would be quite right. For the many visitors who travel on it, the ride, the views, the engines and carriages are more than enough to make it a lovely day out. The motorists on their way to or from the seaside enjoy a break for refreshments in the tea rooms at Llanfair Caereinion station surrounded by the sights and sounds of a by-gone steam age. Photographers with complicated cameras compose clever shots at Welshpool station, under the hill, whilst children old and young snap the smoke-puffing engine arriving or leaving. But in another sense this railway is part of an international enterprise stretching from Russia and the Baltic, through Europe and Africa and the Caribbean down to Australia. This railway is now, and has been since its beginnings as a preserved railway, an international adventure.
