From the Author:
A description of the book
The story of the purchase of the North Lochinver Estate made world headlines in February 1993. The momentous months from June 1992 are recorded in this book with the activities of the Assynt Crofters' Trust being placed in historical context and giving some legislative background so the purchase can be seen in the round. The part played by key members of the community is unfolded, as the people of Assynt commited themselves to this historic movement and finally claimed the land for their own people. The book also looks at some of the issues surrounding crofting trusts in the context of Scottish land reform. In his foreward to the book, Dr James Hunter, the award winning historian of the Highlands and Islands, first Director of the Scottish Crofters Union and current Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said that when considering land reform proposals: "...the Members of the Scottish Parliament... ought to be steered firmly in the direction of this book. Here they will find why land reform matters; why it engenders such strong feeling; why it is one of the keys to ensuring, in the Highlands and Islands especially, that the Scottish Parliament takes the steps needed to make Scotland a better, freer, place." In his review of the book in The Herald (29th June, 1999), David Ross said: "John Macaskill has done us a great service in producing a book which is essential reading for anyone who has any interest in what is happening on the issue of land ownership, or indeed recent Scottish history."
