GEORGE HUDSON, born at Howsham, near York, on March 10th, 1800, inherited a fortune under dubious circumstances at the age of 27 . He quickly became a leading York politician and developed a flair for railway promotion. By the end of 1848 he controlled over a quarter of Britain's railway system and had been responsible for the expenditure of some £30 million. But in the following year his long-standing financial malpractices were brought to light, and the "railway king" was abruptly dethroned and disgraced. In recent times there has been a campaign to "reinstate" him, although this ignores a number of basic truths. This book, published to coincide with the centenary of his death on December l4th, 1871, provides an overdue re-assessment of Hudson. It also contains a most detailed account of
