This volume is intended to serve as a text or reference on map projections for students on geography, surveying and cartography courses. Other aspects of cartography, such as map drafting, lettering, symbolization, map reproduction and the design of thematic maps are not covered here. Each chapter includes a set of problems (for a total of 82). Only a few involve drafting, but many are suitable for conversion to map-drafting exercises. Some instructors may want to use them in that way. Chapter 11 introduces map compilation. All numerical examples and problems are in metric units, but occasional references to miles, feet and inches are included for those preferring to teach with English units. Where the problems list alternate units, the answers or partial answers given refer only to the SI units. Chapter 10 includes a complete description of the important Universal Transverse Mercator and Universal Polar Stereographic grid systems. The appendices include a table listing the characteristics of the most important map projections, some supplementary material on Tissot's indicatrix and several programs for pocket calculators.
