Insightful and useful. Explains why theological reflection is critical, and how to pursue it responsibly and fruitfully. --Timothy E. O'Connell, Loyola Institute of Pastoral Studies

About the Author

Patricia O'Connell Killen is professor of American religions, chair of the Department of Religion, and director of the Center for Religion, Cultures, and Society in the Western United States at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Killen s research focuses on how broad regional social and cultural factors influence and are influenced by individual and institutional religious dynamics and sensibility. Killen has worked extensively with journalists regionally and nationally on religion in the West. She is the primary editor of Religion and Public Life in the Pacific Northwest: The None Zone. Killen received the Paul Bator Memorial Award for the year 2000, from the Canadian Catholic Historical Association for Writing the Pacific Northwest into Canadian and U.S. Catholic History: Geography, Demographics, and Regional Religion, which appeared in Historical Studies. Killen received her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in religious studies from Stanford University. John De Beer is currently serving St. Marks Episcopal Church, Burlington, Massachusetts, as Rector. Previously he was Rector of St. Martin s-in-the-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park, Maryland, together with his wife Tricia de Beer, who is now the Rector at the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington, Massachusetts. Tricia helped conceive the KLESIS curriculum, contributed to Connect, and substantially revised the current version of Commit. Tricia and John have two sons, Michael and Christopher. Michael helped establish KLESIS, setting up the website and advising on program and marketing. His sudden death in 2006 was a great blow. Christopher lives in North Carolina with his wife and daughter. Prior to moving to Maryland, John served as Congregation Development Consultant for the Diocese of South Florida. For eight years before that he was the Education Director for the Theology Extension Center at the University of the South, where he participated in the development of the Education for Ministry Program.
