This is a collection of hunting adventures by American sportsmen and naturalists who experienced the rich and colourful rural culture of Mexico before World War II. Included are stories by such famous author-sportsmen as Lew Wallace Frederic Remington, Charles Sheldon, Jack O'Connor, and Aldo Leopold. Among the biologist contributors are Edward W. Nelson (later director of the US Biological Survey) and the great tropical ornithologist Edward Blake. Prominent among the naturalist-adventurers are John Steinbeck, telling of "A Half-Hearted Hunt for Bighorn Sheep", and Kermit Roosevelt (Teddy's son), who sought bighorn sheep in the Sonoran Desert in August. "Mexican Game Trails" is divided into four parts, each representing a geographic region of Mexico and the wildlife peculiar to it. The stories have been selected not only for their literary merit and accurate descriptions of the game and its habitat, but also for their portrayal of the people and customs that the sportsmen encountered.
