Last Days of the Dog-Men won this year's Sue Kaufman Prize for first fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Shelby Foote was one of its biggest advocates. At the awards dinner, he recommended the book to Richard Ford, saying, among other things, "it's the damnedest writing about dogs you ever saw."
