About the book >.>.> It is not only for the convenience of this work that Shropshire has been cut by a north/south divide-for both east and west have their own industrial and mining histories. East Shropshire is already covered in a sister publication; it is an area of a few highly concentrated and, in their time, intensively worked coalfield areas. West Shropshire, on the other hand, has remained mainly agricultural even in its mining areas which are generally small and hilly. One area, very hilly and mineralised, turned out to be rich in metal ores and fortuitously placed alongside the Shrewsbury Coalfields, the other small mineralised areas never produced much ore. In the northeast, around Oswestry, the Denbighshire Coalfield extends into the county, this area has always been more closely associated with North Wales than Shropshire. It is intended that this volume will cover in detail the south-western area, the orefield around Shelve and its neigh- bouring coalfield near Shrewsbury, but examples are given from the northeast.
