This unique story begins with a brief look back into the history of balloon flights during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; early observations made from aircraft in the First World War; formation and development of meteorological flights during inter-war years; and pre-war Met aircrew and aircraft.

The body of the book is concerned with the establishment of Met Reece Flights in the Second World War; the formation and development of high-altitude and long-range Met sorties; types of aircraft; expansion of network; Meteorological Air Observers; operational procedures; coding and transmission of data; plotting and analysis of reports; synoptic weather maps. Importantly there is reference to notable events such as Operation Torch and D Day - highlighting the value of reports made by Met Recce Flights to weather forecasting in the Second World War.

A variety of sources have been used including extracts from aircrew accounts, logbooks and operation record books.

The appendices include a map showing the nominal tracks of the Met Recce sorties, and chronologies for the Flights and Squadrons involved in this sphere of operations.
