This fascinating collection of over 200 photographs and other documents charts the development of the town of Peacehaven during the twentieth century. At the beginning of this period, the coast was barely developed; then, largely through the entrepreneurial skills of Charles William Neville, the resort began to expand.
Early life in Peacehaven had much of the 'pioneer spirit' more usually associated with exploration in distant lands. The roads remained unmetalled for a long period, and hastily built shops and site offices were constructed to meet the needs of the new residents. The land was divided into plots for sale to the adventurous founders of the town, who constructed many of the bungalows whose distinctive styles are still to be seen everywhere in Peacehaven today. Many of these buildings are further illustrated through architects' plans, promotional material from Mr Neville and others, and artists' impressions of how the town was intended to look.
This book has been compiled with the support of the Peacehaven and Telscombe Historical Society, of which the author is chairman.
