In 1783 the Montgolfier brothers made history with the first hot-air balloon flight, and so began the era of flight and man's love affair with the skies. In this book, LTC Rolt (the pioneer of industrial history) takes us on a journey through the history of ballooning. sprinkled with lively extracts from journals, and drawing from contemporary accounts, The Balloonists follows the exploits of these early pioneers of flight: Rozier, Lunardi, Blanchard and Samuel King, who constructed possibly the largest balloon ever made. This complete history of balloons and the intrepid men and women who flew in them recounts stories of the first flights to 1903, when the Wright Brothers heavier-than-air flight at Kittyhawk changed the history of aviation forever. This book will delight everyone who has enjoyed watching balloons float tranquilly through the skies on a summer's evening.

Product Description:

On a November day 223 years ago Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandre ascended in their Montgolfier balloon to become the first aeronauts. This recent edition of LTC Rolt's classic book is a history of flight before the Wright Brothers. From the first Channel crossing and steam-driven powered flight, to the attempts at ballooning across the Atlantic, it features eye-witness accounts, anecdotes and impeccable research to shed new light on the beginnings of aviation.

Synopsis:

First published in 1966 as "The Aeronauts: A History of Ballooning 1783-1903", this book is a complete history of balloons and the intrepid men who flew in them. Beginning in 1783, the year in which balloons first took flight, it ends in 1903, the year in which the Wright Brothers first heavier-than-air flight at Kittyhawk changed the history of aviation for ever. The exploits of balloonists attracted the attention and admiration of the masses like nothing before: within weeks of the first flights, its form featured in designs of wallpaper and fabrics, in jewels and on snuff boxes, and as balloon clocks and chandeliers. The aeronauts themselves became heroes of their time. From the first flight, by the Montgolfier brothers in a balloon of paper and cloth, through the first Channel crossing by air, showman aeronauts, female aeronauts, efforts to cross the Atlantic and the use of balloons in war, this is a wholly fascinating and riveting book. Lightly and entertainingly written, it includes lively extracts from journals and contemporary accounts, as well as engravings of the period. This new edition has a foreword by one of the foremost aeronauts of today, Don Cameron.
