Medieval Genealogy provides an account of the records available and the techniques needed to find and understand them. In his accessible and comprehensive guide, Paul Chambers helps the amateur genealogist research records before 1600. Discover how to use wills, taxation lists, parish records, manorial documents, funeral monuments and coats of arms to search for your medieval ancestors. DNA testing can even establish your original ancestral stock - whether Viking, Celt or Middle Eastern. By focusing on published sources, Medieval Genealogy can be used by those who do not have access to original documents. It highlights common problems, clears away misconceptions and fills an obvious gap in the genealogists' library.

Review:

A splendid idea, splendidly executed... It's hard to see how a book on this subject could be more informative. -- Your Family Tree, November, 2005

The author has worked hard so the reader can work less hard, and I learned a lot from this book -- Ancestors, February, 2006

This is a scholarly but realistic and readable work. -- Family History Monthly, January, 2006

From the Author:

I have written this book for those who have managed to trace their family history back to the year 1600 or earlier and who now want to pursue their research into the medieval era.
I have gathered together a comprehensive list of the best and most accessible medieval records that may be of use to the genealogist. I explain what these records are, what they mean, where they are to be found (especially published transcriptions) and how best the they can be interpreted. By doing so I hope to show the reader that there is a wealth of medieval material available to the genealogist much of which can be found in published volumes which takes away the need to travel to record offices in order to consult original documents.
In writing this guide I have assumed that readers will have a range of experience; from those with little or no knowledge of the medieval world to those who may be more familiar with medieval records and custom. I have also assumed that many readers will be researching their family history from outside of Great Britain or will not have regular access to those archives that hold original documents.
As well as serving the general genealogical community, this book will also function as a reference guide for more experienced genealogists as well as historians and archaeologists who need to trace information about local or national historical figures.
