Synopsis:

The 1988 Education Reform Act, which paved the way for the National Curriculum, also stressed the need for a broad and balanced curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils. However, unlike the National Curriculum subjects themselves, such cross-curriculum considerations are given a low priority and do not warrant statutory assessment.
