Wealth or Poverty? Jane Austen's Novels Explored

Review:

Stephen Mahony has managed to make the economics of eighteenth-century life crucial to every emotional beat of Austen s novels. With every page I was revisiting the novels skinned to the economic bones. He shows us through meticulous investigation of the country s eighteenth-century accounts that Austen s world is a frightening reflection of our own, and yet he writes so effortlessly and with such an engaging style. One is hooked from the start as we jog along in his erudite carriage through Austen s time and into our own. An unlikely reincarnation, Stephen Mahony has many of Austen s gifts. The two of them together make an utterly wonderful read. As he weaves us in and out of the economic comparison we relive the books with a sharpened eye and a seam of terror. He show us that the flesh of Jane Austen s exploration of love hangs on the flinty skeleton of money. --Fiona Shaw CBE, Actor

Book Description The Crowood Press Ltd, United Kingdom, 2016. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Money is significant in Jane Austen's novels. Her characters worry about it, scheme for it and, of course, spend it. Money is not simply a way of placing people: it propels plots, adds drama and tells us much about an individual's nature and morals. Taking the novels as his starting point, Stephen Mahony looks at the wealth and social standing of Austen's characters in relation to the economic background of the day, giving us real insight into their aspirations and motivations. What did a servant earn? Just how poor was Miss Bates? What were the pay and conditions of a midshipman like William Price? What would it cost to house, clothe and feed the entire Bennet family? And how much would Elizabeth Bennet need to live comfortably if she hadn't married Darcy? The result is a revealing account of Austen, her characters and the England in which they lived.
