Very clean very tight pages with general traces of storage and with very minor bumping to most corners. 96pp. An account of nineteen independent railways in England and Wales run by Colonel Stephens which almost formed a fifth group when the other railways in Britain were amalgamated into four groupings in 1923. Most of them were stony broke, some had been built illegally but they still survived successfully as transport entities. A fascinating account of Stephens' skill at running railways where many others would likely have failed. We do not use stock photos, the picture displayed is of the actual book for sale. Book Description Hardback. Condition: Mint. First Edition. THE COLONEL STEPHEN'S RAILWAYS A Pictorial Survey. John Scott-Morgan. David & Charles, Newton Abbot. 1978 First Edition ISBN 071537544X 96pp Illustrated Hardback. This review copy is in mint unread condition bound in illustrated laminated boards, a dust wrapper is not called for. The text block is unmarked, tight, white, bright and square. Laid in is the publisher's original review request slip. A 3' gauge tramway carrying trippers to the sandy beaches of the Kent and Sussex borders, a standard gauge branch and cross country lines in Kent, a line which is today virtually a commuter in the far west from Plymouth, and the 1'11.5" gauge Festiniog railway, one of the leading Welsh tourist railways of today would not seem to have much in common. Yet in the two decades between the First and Second World Wars they and several other standard and narrow gauge railways up and down the country were under common management within the railway empire of Colonel Holman Frederick Stephens, manager, engineer and railwayman extraordinary. This album forms a tribute to Stephens and his railways. Without him it is doubtful whether two major preserved railways of today and certain BR branches would exist. Ref JJ2.
