A work of art in its own right, Amandes Amères was launched in June 1997 at the international art event Documenta X in Kassel, Germany.

This book marks Phaidon's first participation in this major and influential event. Synopsis:

This volume comprises 38 colour photographs by French artist Jean Marc Bustamante depicting the interstal zones of suburbs, entropic non-places between the urban and the rural. Three southern cities of Buenos Aires, Miami and Tel Aviv are portrayed in non-tourist scenes of half-finished motorways, rubbish-strewn forests or supermarket forecourts; all evenly sunlit, they have a strangely utopian air. At the same time they look like forensic shots of the scene of a crime, mysterious "non-sites" of urban anonymity. Included in "Documenta X", one of the world's largest contemporary art exhibitions held in Kassel every 5 years, the book will be sold alongside the exhibition catalogue.

About the Author:

Jean-Marc Bustamante, born in Toulouse in 1952, lives and works in Paris. A retrospective of his photographic works was presented at the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris in 1999.
