This is an excellent book, giving expert advice on all aspects of gardening, from cultivation to planting. The author, Stefan Buczacki, has set out to explain the recognised, correct and incorrect ways of carrying out gardening tasks and procedures, but he has also acknowledged the need and opportunity to include personal experience and opinion. As such, the resulting book is a description, discussion and explanation of gardening as he sees it. It is full of useful ideas, hints and advice, and contains nothing outside his experience. The book is split into three sections: the first dealing with practical and essential information on successful gardening techniques, such as planning, tools and equipment, obtaining the best from a site, and so on. Particularly interesting are the chapters containing advice on gardening with children and gardening for the disabled. The second part, Plants and Gardens, is an extensive and comprehensive guide to using plants around the garden, the garden situations in which they might be grown and how they should be grown, eg: roses, herbs, fruit, vegetables, bedding plants and so on. The list seems endless. Section three, the glossary, is an explanation of gardening words, terms and phrases, which are often ambiguous or baffling, such as "soil sickness", "skin spot", "organic" and lots more. It is extremely well written, easy to read and understand and can be enjoyed by the novice and experienced gardener alike. The first-class photos and sketches (more than 400 in all) add greatly to the overall enjoyment of the book. Once taken up, it becomes very hard to put down. --Susan NaylorSynopsis:
