This is an amazing book. It's a story about this wonderful couple who were very influential in Europe in the art world, whom Calvin Tomkins met by accident and whom he befriended. Their names are Sara and Gerald Murphy. They were kind of esoteric, but it's an incredible story, when you think about what you need to live a successful life.--Wendy Vogel "Modern Painters "From the Publisher:
An enchanting memoir of the lives of Gerald and Sara Murphy
New Yorker writer Calvin Tomkins recreated the privileged world of Gerald and Sara Murphy, two American originals who were at the center of a charmed circle of artists and writers in France in the 1920s. To their home in Antibes came Picasso and Leger, Hemingway and Fitzgerald, who used the couple as models for the Divers in TENDER IS THE NIGHT. The book features 69 photographs from the Murphys' collection, and reproductions of some of Gerald Murphy's remarkable abstract paintings that predate Pop art by 40 years. LIVING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE was first published in 1971. Time Magazine described it as "A marvel of taste and economy." This new edition included revised material and a new introduction by Calvin Tomkins.
