Am 4. Oktober 1908 erschoss sich zu Wien der dreiundzwanzig jährige Otto Weininger, Doktor der Philosophie. Von ihm stammen zwei Bücher: „geschlecht und Charakter. Eine prinzipielle Untersuchung, das kurz vor seinem Tode erschien und „über die letzten Dinge, das Ende 1903 von seinem Freunde Moriz Rappaport als Nachlass herausgegeben wurde, beide im Braumullerschen Verlag zu Wien.
Besonders „geschlecht und Charakter das eine Losung der Frauen frage in höherem Sinne darstellen sollte, hat allgemeines Aufsehen her vorgerufen; es hat eine Reihe von begeisterten Lobrednern gefunden; auch an lebhaftem und energischem Widerspruche hat es nicht gefehlt.
