The only book to deal comprehensively with insect feeding was published by C. T. Brues in 1946. His Insect Dietary was an account of insect feeding habits. Since that time there has been a revolution in biology, and almost all aspects of our understanding of insect feeding have expanded to an extent and into areas that would have been unthinkable in Brues' day. Yet, our book does not replace Insect Dietary but, instead, complements it, because our aim is to bring together information on the mechanisms by which food quality and quantity are regulated. We deliberately focus attention on the feeding process; to include food-finding would have required a much larger book and would have moved the focus away from more proximate mechanisms. This book is dedicated to the late Vincent G. Dethier. As a pioneer in studying the physiological basis of animal behavior, he focused on regulation of feeding in flies and caterpillars. His work on the blowfly, together with that by his many students and co-workers, still provides the most completely described mechanism of insect feeding. The citation of his work in almost every chapter in this book illustrates the importance of his findings and ideas to our current understanding of regulation of insect feeding. The authors in this book provide many innovative and stimulating ideas typifying Dethier's approach to the study of feeding be havior.

Review:
` ...a very readable reference book that I will be recommending to students.'

Synopsis:
This timely volume presents a comprehensive overview of the behavioural and physiological mechanisms underlying insect feeding. The single source for up-to-date information on the subject, it features contributions from the most authoritative scientists in the field worldwide. Taking an accessible approach focusing on the sequential stages of the feeding process, "Regulatory Mechanisms in Insect Feeding" explores the principles regulating feeding, and it offers information necessary for the development of more effective and environmentally safe methods to control the feeding of pest insects. The authors incorporate a spectrum of information in areas ranging from neurophysiology to insect control.

An inclusive reference that reflects recent expansion and advances in the field, this book considers the problems encountered by insects when feeding on different types of food, as well as their adaptations for dealing with the problems introduces the cyclic nature of feeding activity and its components and provides the framework for the discussion of various control mechanisms discusses the underlying regulatory mechanisms of feeding in both the short and long terms in insects with a diversity of feeding habits synthesizes concepts and details of the basic mechanisms underlying insect feeding behaviour that are essential for the development of pest management methods."Regulatory Mechanisms in Insect Feeding" is the ideal text for graduate courses in entomology and zoology with a special focus on insect behaviour, physiology, neurobiology, and control. It is also a valuable resource for ecologists interested in insect-plant and insect-animal interactions, for scientists concerned with the mechanisms behind the physiology and behaviour of feeding, and for those working in crop protection and pest management.
