K. Ramazani Harry F. Byrd Professor of Government and Foreign Affairs and Director of the GCC Project University of Virginia "An excellent analysis of Iran's post-Khomeini domestic and foreign policies within a historical context that helps the reader understand today's internecine struggles between President Rafsanjani and his more radical Islamic opponents. . . . It is a valuable and timely assessment."- Christopher Van Hollen Vice President, Middle East Institute Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs "Shireen Hunter provides an exceptionally clear road map that shows how Iran arrived at its present predicament and where it may be going from here. Her analysis penetrates the veil of mystery that too often shrouds Iranian politics and holds out a modest hope for a gradual healing of the wounds inflicted on U.S.-Iran relations. This is a handbook for students, statesmen, and citizens who want to understand Iran's policies and their implications for security and stability in the Persian Gulf."-Gary S. Sick Author of October Surprise: America's Hostages and the Election of Ronald Reagan (1991)
