Lo stato frammentario del materiale rende altresì molto difficile la determinazione dell'età e della notazione, ben più difficile di quando si hanno sott'occhio intieri codici. E per ciò il chiarissimo Signor Bannister vuole che le sue indicazioni, benchè assai ponderate, non si riguardino come assolute e definitive, ma quali modesti tentativi proposti alla ulteriore discussione degli scien ziati.
Ci è sembrato inoltre opportuno di limitarci ai codici anteriori al secondo e terzo decennio del sec. XIV ante riori, cioè, all'epoca in cui il sistema della notazione era divenuto uniforme e stabile da per tutto.
