About this Item
Image 5.75" x 4". Cabinet card size 6.5" x 4". Encased in PSA/DNA certified plastic. Very Good. SIGNED BY JOSEPH LISTER: "Joseph Lister/ with best regards to his friend Dr Fessler" (see photo). "The Jerrard photograph is the most important image of Lister in the 1880s." The photographer was George Milner Gibson Jerrard (1848-1918). There is an ink note on the verso: "28 October 1889/ London Kings College." From 1877-1893 Lister was Clinical Professor of Surgery at King's College London. There are also two newspaper clippings in German glued to the verso. One is about Joseph Lister's last public appearance on 28 June 1907 at the Guildhall to receive the Freedom of the City of London. The other is an obituary notice. I think two inferences are reasonable: (1) the photograph was signed by Joseph Lister on October 28, 1889, at King's College London, and (2) Dr. Fessler was German. I have not yet been able to identify Dr. Fessler, however. PERSONAL NOTE: Don't blame me for the PSA encapsulation in plastic. I did not do it. I don't like it. I would like to think the plastic can be removed without damaging the photograph inside, but I will not be doing it. Signed Lister photographs are scarce, so, in my opinion, this is much better than nothing. Seller Inventory # 17002
