About this Item
Culver City, 1944. Three (or four) chapters of an unfinished work. This original typescript includes the title-page; one preliminary leaf with quotations from Elder John Leland and Thomas Jefferson upon the occasion of the presentation of the mammoth cheese to Jefferson in 1802; and the first three chapters and a carbon copy of a fourth(?). 47 pages in all, with 41 corrections, and some of the material gathered to research the subject of returning soldiers (a list of this material is available upon request). The chapters are, ?Of Ulysses and the Trojan War?; ?Concerning Ulysses? Fairly Difficult but Ultimately Accomplished Readjustment to Civil Life in Ithaca?; ?In Which a Quick Once Over Is Given Some Hardy Old Romans and Their Foes.? With a carbon copy of what may have been an addition to the third chapter or a fourth, beginning, ?Lucullus was a pessimist. Not one of the peevish sort, but a happy man whose life was not tainted by an even moderate faith in the essential goodness of humankind, the justice of the Roman cause, or the benevolence or malevolence of the Gods, if any.? A humorous account beginning with literature?s most famous returned soldier. The tone becomes more serious when public figures of the 1940s such as Nicholas Murray Butler and Will H. Hays enter the tale. In fact, the authors issue a warning to returning soldiers, ?Having rid other countries of Fascist set-ups, our American hero will find that in no other land than his own are Fascists still active and flourishing openly.?.
