9 folio leaves with a small flap leaf to the front. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/2") threaded at the right side with hand written / text to recto and verso. This document is an inquiry ordered to be made by the Bishop of Guadalajara. An Englishman named Juan Ignacio, who had lived in Laguna de Términos (Isla del Carmen) with other Englishmen and under no law extracted palo de tinta" to send to England - he was a pirate; but later change sides - it is noted that he had joined the fleet de Barlovento for a period of 7 years (was a military formation that consisted of 50 ships created by the Spanish Empire to protect its overseas American territories from attacks from its European enemies, as well as attacks from pirates and privateers). When traveling from Zacatecas to the mines he got into a field of Nopales to eat some tunas. As he was doing this, a young girl appeared in front of him, very beautiful, dressed in green with a white cloth on her head. She asked him where he was going. He was surprised, as he had not seen her before on the road. He said he was looking for Don Juan Ignacio de Larranaga to ask him to let him work on a mine he had. The girl wished him a good trip and asked him to visit her while in town. As he asked where he may find her, she answered, "you will find me during mass". As he arrived in town, he went to see Don Juan Ignacio de Larranaga. As he was waiting outside his home he felt a strong pain, he fell to the floor and crawled to a window, where he fainted. When he came back to consciousness, he was inside the house and a priest wanted him to confess, as they thought he was to die. He said he was not catholic, but that he wanted to be baptized, as he fainted again. Later, a father of the Compañía de Jesús baptized him. As he was still sick, the wife of Mr Larranaga touched him with a dress of the image of the Virgin, and he was instantly cured. When he was in church and saw the image of the Virgin there, he declared it was the same girl he had seen in the Nopales field. This document includes testimonies by various witnesses, Mr Larranaga, his wife and others. These reports were sent to Guadalajara, where they resolve to declare this as an authentic miracle.
