About this Item
Folio manuscript lined note-book. 34cm x 24cm. Contemporary roan spine on marbled boards, boards detached. Label G. O. B. Kingdom to front board. Signature of William St Clair to inner paste down (the well-known writer on Modern Greece and collector of the Romantic period). No date, but would seem to be 1820s/1830s, and largely in the same hand. A manuscript compilation of romantic poetry and epitaphs, usually with an accompanying engraving pasted in, interspersed with the occasional note or song, eg Turkish Song: The Light that Beams through yonder Palm, dated 1826. Approximately 69 pages, no blanks. The album opens with The Bride s Farewell (by Thomas Williams), then: and doth not a meeting like this make amends (Thomas Moore), then gradually introduces epitaphs, of Jenner, Dryden, of Mr Strange a Lawyer: Here lies an honest Lawyer and that s Strange…Some foxing and offsetting, opening leaves rather dusty, becoming less so as the album goes on, but clearly well-used throughout. Occasionally, an engraving appears to have fallen out, but most are present. One apparently original sketch of a country cottage pasted in, and also a [later?] small portrait photograph (8cm x 5cm) with the name Mr Emery next to it. An evocative album, with a nice juxtaposition of illustration and text. Seller Inventory # A94031
