About this Item
Description: French diplomat and developer of the Suez Canal, Ferdinand Marie, Viscount of Lesseps (1805-1894), scratched out and signed this brief note to a dear friend written in French on a 4 x 5 ¼ piece of paper. De Lesseps served as a consul for France in numerous places, including Tunis, Alexandria, Cairo, Rotterdam, Malaga, Barcelona, and Madrid. He retired from diplomatic service in 1854 and set his sights on creating the Suez Canal, an endeavor that took fifteen years to complete. He used his connections in Egypt to obtain a concession to create the Suez Canal Company. In 1869 the canal was finished, joining the Mediterranean and Red Seas and greatly reducing the time it took to travel between Europe and East Asia. Condition: Fold line, lightly toned at left blank margin, otherwise in very good condition with de Lesseps characteristically messy signature. Seller Inventory # A00941
