We offer a woodblock print of the German naval officer Felix von Luckner, signed by the artist in graphite at the bottom right and plate signed at the lower left. The image size is 6 1/4"x9 1/4" on Japanese paper that is 10 1/2" x 7 1/4". It is hinged and matted within folded, heavy wove paper that is 19 1/4"x14 1/4". Signed under the print by von Luckner in graphite and inscribed on the mat to the artist: "By Jove never say die. To Charlie Pont with happy days, Felix Count Luckner May 27, 31." Felix Graf von Luckner (1881 1966), or Count Luckner, was a German nobleman, naval officer, author, and sailor who earned the epithet Der Seeteufel (the Sea-Devil) for his exploits in command of the sailing commerce raider SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) between 1916 and 1917. Luckner's habit of successfully waging war without casualties made him a hero and a legend on both sides. Charles Ernest Pont (1898 1971) was a French-born Swiss-American artist and Baptist minister. He painted murals for the WPA, and was a renowned maritime illustrator. His work in permanent public collections at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Navy Department in Washington DC and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Condition: Two adhesive tabs remain on verso at the top corners of the print, there is some very faint toning and foxing on the mat. Very good condition. Seller Inventory # A00526
