Small archive of material from the Kansas Prairie Printmaker.______ The recipient had attended Winfield High School with Logan and they remained friends for decades. ____________ 1. Broken run of eight Christmas cards. Each is a single sheet of heavy paper, 12.25 x 9.25", printed one one side and folded to quarters. Each features Logan artwork on the front cover and across the double wide spread in the middle. ____________ 1.1. Front titled "1863 / Merrie Christmas / 1963" with a vignette portrait of a Missouri Civil War soldier. The interior has an image of an old soldier leaning back in a chair, surrounded by Civil War memorabilia on the left panel. The gramophone is playing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" with the lyrics filling the right panel. Signed in the plate "Col. Herschel C. Logan / of the Old West." It is indicated as "No. 9 of a series." ____________ 1.2. "Christmas Greetings / 1964" The front has an old southern Colonel standing with a wreath. The interior has a portrait of Logan working at his drafting table with the ghostly Colonel standing by on the left three quarters. A gramophone is playing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with the lyrics floating in the air. The right quarter reprints an article from The Salina Journal on the 25th anniversary of the first appearance of "The Colonel." It is signed in the plate "Herschel C. Logan / of the old west / an m'pal The Colonel" It is labeled as "No. 10 of a series." ____________ 1.3. "Christmas / 1966" The front panel has a snow covered church steeple. The interior has Logan in his studio standing and staring out the window at a winter church scene. On the right are the lyrics to "O Come All Ye Faithful." Signed in the plate as "Herschel C. Logan / of the old West." It is labeled as "No. 11 of a series." ____________ 1.4. "Greetings / 1967" The front has what looks to be a palm tree topped with a Christmas star. The interior has Logan outdoors under a palm working at his easel. The song quote this year is "O beautiful for spacious skies." Signed in the plate as "Herschel C. Logan / of the old West" and includes his new address in Tustin, California. It is labeled as "No. 12 of a series." ____________ 1.5. "Season's Greetings / 1968" The front has the Christmas star over a hilly landscape. The interior has The Colonel sketching "The Old Man of Pyramid Lake" which fills the right. The quote is the second verse of "My country tis of thee." Signed in the plate as "Herschel C. Logan / of the old West." There is no series number. Laid in is a slip of Logan's letterhead memo stock with a typewritten note to the recipient reporting on his recent activities. Signed with a single "H" in green ink. ____________ 1.6. "Christmas / 1969" The front is an image of the Christmas star over a very modernist church. The interior is The Colonel sketching the "Lone Cypress / Carmel by the Sea." The quote is the fourth verse of "My Country tis of thee." Signed in the p as "Herschel C. Logan / of the old West." There is no series number. Laid in is a letterhead memo slip with a manuscript generic holiday greeting signed "H". ____________ 1.7. "Christmas 1970" The front image is of a northwest Indian totem pole casting the shadow of a cross. The interior reports on Logan's recent marriage to Anne Serven and subsequent honeymoon through Alaska. It features a map of their path from Santa Ana to Kotzebue" and shows them both panning for gold. The quote is from the third stanza of America the Beautiful -- ".May God thy gold refine." Signed in the plate as "The Logans / Anne & Herschel." The rear panel is printed with description of the Thunderbird Totem Pole shown on the front. Laid in is a 4.5 x 3.5" color photo of the pair in winter gear. Written on the back is "Anne and Herschel / Logan -- 1970." ______ 1.8. "Christmas / 1971" The front is a drawing of a wreath and candle beside and old timey photo of The Colonel and his wife. The "photo" is credited in the border to "LogAnne Photographers.".
