About this Item
President of the New London Northern Railroad Company, Robert Coit (1830-1904), penned and signed this brief letter in 1884 to Charles H. Clark, Esq. It reads: "My dear Sir; I did receive your circular note about taxes. At that time I thought that I would submit some "views" to your commission, but I have not found time to prepare them, and I do not expect now to send you anything. Yours very truly Robt. Coit". Robert Coit also served as a lawyer and probate judge in New London, Connecticut, as well as mayor of the city (1879), a member of the Connecticut State Senate (1880-1883) and the State House of Representatives (1897-1898). Aside from his career in politics, Coit also spent time as president of local banks and several companies in the New London area. The New London Northern Railroad Company succeeded the New London, Willimantic and Palmer Railroad in 1861 and stretched from New London, CT to Brattleboro, VT. Once a piece of the Central Vermont Railway and the Canadian National Railway, the New London Northern now rests under the auspices of the New England Central Railroad. Written on an 8 1/4" x 5" sheet of Coit's personal stationery from the President's Office of the New London Northern Railroad Co. Condition: Fold lines, a few errant spots, otherwise in very good condition. Seller Inventory # A00899
