Gallimard on title illus. instruments, canon, etc. + woodcut vignette by Cochin's son at head of first page and page 161 illus. instruments & geometric figs. + 17 folding engraved plates. Faint embossed stamp on title; a very good copy. The Jesuit, Abbé Deidier (1696-1746), professor of mathematics in the École Militairie at La Fére, published a number of treatises on mathematical and mechanical subjects which led to his reputation as a distinguished mathematician of his day. Following the methods of Wallis, Deidier applies algebra to the indivisibles of Cavallerius to obtain a measure of surfaces and solids.
