About this Item
Two-color folding map printed in red and black on thin paper. Sheet measures approximately 32 x 18 inches when fully open. Copyright date of April 19, 1903. Very good condition. A few small breaks along center fold; a hint of very light toning; fingerprint smudge in left margin. Verso is blank, except where a previous owner wrote "Union Pacific Oil Wells" in pencil. This map depicts oil and gas wells in Uinta County, which is located in the southwestern corner of Wyoming. It also marks lands belonging to the Standard Reserve Oil Company, the rail lines of the Union Pacific and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroads, as well as other buildings and roads. On the right hand side, there is a cross section diagram of the Union Pacific Oil Well. Though Benjamin Bonneville reported oil springs in what is now Wyoming in 1832, the territory s first oil well wasn t drilled until 1883. The first refinery came in 1895, following a number of significant strikes and the increasing demand for oil. The Spring Valley area depicted in this map had its own little oil boom around the turn of the century, but according to wyohistory.org, it was short-lived due to the shallowness of the wells. This is among the earliest maps to show the exploitation of oil resources in Uinta County, Wyoming. Only 5 copies listed in OCLC as of June 2024. Seller Inventory # 025004
