About this Item
Lithographed by Worley & Bracher with period colour. In excellent condition with the exception of waterstaining in the margins. Light foxing, three repaired tears in bottom margin. A fine town map of Amenia from F.W. Beers 'Atlas of New York and vicinity' A fascinating and historically important map of Amenia and the surrounding district, comprised of five inset maps of the area. The maps include street plans which identify the lay out of the city as well as the names of the owners of various properties - the inset also includes a brief business directory. Beers, in association with A.D. Ellis and G.G. Soule published county atlases under the blanket title 'New York and its vicinity' in two editions appearing in 1867 and 1868. However, an examination of various copies of these atlases shows that there were at least six variants with each being tailored to a much more local market than the title implied. The present map comes from one of two publications (both of which appeared in 1867. One (with a total of 57 maps) included 33 maps of locations in Fairfield County and 16 of Westchester County, the second with 51 maps included 33 of Fairfield County and 16 of Westchester County.
