About this Item
Large folding map of Bradford and the outlying regions, surveyed by Walker and Thornton and published in 1874. Large ornate title, compass rose and arms of Borough of Bradford. Mapped to a scale of 6 inches to 1 mile. Later rigid leather covers with contrasting label to front. Patterned pastedown with ownership stamp to upper corner. Identical patterned paper to upper reverse panel, with owners name in ink to upper edge. Map mounted in sections on linen. Minor dust-marking to reverse. Linen thinning on folds with a few of holes at fold junctions. Slight fraying to edges. Map face a little toned (not as dark as the photo shows) and with some dust-marking. Another ownership stamp to upper right corner. Some additional red ink markings and marginal writing to the map: assumed to relate land development/ownership. A selection of buildings numbered in the centre but no evidence of what the numbers relate to. Boundaries coloured in outline. Parks marked with a green wash. Street layouts are clear and sharp. Many proposed developments are marked: parks, buildings and especially railways. Marked with dotted lines are the proposed routes of the Bradford & Thornton Railway, along with a branch looping through some streets to join up with the Leeds Bradford Railway. This was never fully developed, as the 1882 map shows the line terminating short of this junction at City Road Station. The Horton area is showing as beginning to be developed; likewise Mannington, Undercliffe and other areas a similar distance from the centre. Bowling Iron Works is marked in detail but the Bowling area remains largely undeveloped. Please note: the main photograph shows the map partly folded. A fine map showing the development of Bradford in the late Victorian period. Sheet size when open: 75cm by 76cm approx. COPAC and BL record only two copies of the 1873 edition with no records for this edition. The 1873 map appears to only be in the Scottish national map collection and in the British Library.
