MAP DESCRIPTION: Double-wide, 19 1/4" x 24 1/4", sheet. Plate 44 of KEITH JOHNSTON'S GENERAL ATLAS (undated, circa 1875). CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Near fine as published; slight age toning. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: An excellent map of the states and territories West of the Mississippi River. Fascinating to see the watersheds, topography, and frontier posts with little other clutter. The States/Territory borders show the interesting period in America's westward expansion and states border development. In this map, the entire Northwest is occupied by Washington that extends to the Rocky Mountains at the Continental Divide. Oregon extends to Ft. Boise where a near rectangular Idaho is bordered on the East by Nebraska. The large territory of New Mexico includes all of Arizona, and part of Nevada. Utah Territory is extended to include parts of Nevada and Colorado. North of Nebraska to the northern border of the United States is Dakota. It runs from the Continental Divide in the West to the Red River of the North in the East. Minnesota shows its early boundaries as it extends West to the Missouri River and the Red River of the North. Oklahoma is Indian Territory. Montana, Wyoming, and Arizona are not present.
