Vintage map of South Dakota. This map is printed in blue ink, a trademark of the company's map productions. It is handsomely laid out with the Missouri River running through it baking up the grid pattern of the state's roads. Hard surfaced roads are plentiful for the state with small population. Long distances between towns and cities were shortened by the presence of good roads where time was the. ruling factor of this new generation of automobilists. there are. many advertisers on the back of the map organizer by town locations. umber of paved roads. The map was made in 1929 and this reflected the mobile society of Pierre and outlying cities as far as the roads would allow. The map was easy to use. Mid-West Map Company was based out of Aurora,MO. Aurora was a mining town with lead and zinc being extracted. This would make it unique for a map company that could use the mining engineers to make maps. The town is located in southwest Missouri. They were able to pump out a considerable quantity of maps for distribution throughout the United States. This map of South Dakota fits the bill for the motorists easy use. It was easy to open and close and fit well into storage. According to the Western Association of Map Libraries, there is a guide to dating the company's maps. It is supplied by Angie Cope, Cartographic Materials Catalog Librarian, American Geographical Society. In that entry it is shown that the company was in business with maps issued from 1926-34. It is most likely the Depression was responsible for the firm no longer issuing maps after 1934. Seller Inventory # 589
