About this Item
Karl Bodmerwas born in 1809 in Switzerland. He was trained as an engraver and illustrator. While traveling he met Maximilian who retained him as artist for his trip to North America in Bodmer was a patient man who adjusted to situations very well. On his trip he painted over 400 watercolors. He completed eight-one plates from those watercolors. His medium was aquatint. This plate was completed from his experience during an intertribal Native American battle in which the Balckfeet were subjected to surprise attack by the Assiniboin and Cree groups. The fight occurred outside of Fort MacKenzie. Bodmer composed this piece after the fact. It is a monumental print in the history of North American tribes. The maintains form a drop back for the fort from which muskets are being fired. The Native American teepees are mid stage with many figures fighting in the foreground. This print is in black and white and does not mask any of the engraving with color. The print is in very good condition and is an accurate reflection of the ferocity of Native American combat.
