About this Item
There are approximately 74 airlines listed in the legend. This was an era of airline regulation so there was not much competition between airlines as routes were awarded and traded among airlines. The seventy-four airlines include international airlines flying into the and out of the U.S. Additionally there was on the map New York helicopter airways providing service between LaGuardia, Idlewild and downtown. The was the propeller era. The passenger jet was not put into service until December 10, 1958. American Airlines offered the first domestic jet service using its own planes on January 25, 1959 using a leased Boeing 707. Consequently planes like the Lockheed Constellation were used. The Connie first went into service in 1943. It had a pressurized cabin. This allowed it to fly over weather making plane travel more comfortable. Additionally it was capable of longer hauls where coast to coast flights were desirable. It could cruise at 313 mph and had an effective range of 2.850 miles. This map epitomizes the high point of propeller aviation for passenger traffic in the United States. Seller Inventory # 575
