The Sargasso Sea is also shown very prominently. Several apocryphal contacts with Antarctica are also shown, although Lotter does not attempt to tie these possible discoveries to the unknown southern continent. The map is perhaps most noteworthy for the many early routes of exploration shown, including the routes of: Megellan 1520and#8203; - Gaetani 1542 - Mendana Gallego 1568 - Le Maire 1570 - Mendana Quria 1595 - Noord 1600 - Schouten 1616 - Tasman 1642 - Dampier 1686.Approx 64cm x 53cm including margins with centralfold as issued. Combination of original hand colour and additional later colour (cartouche). Blank on verso. Excellent condition with some tone spots to the margins and across the hemispheres and the left right margins tight but clear, perfect for mounting and framing.Tobias Conrad LOTTER (1717-1777) was a German engraver and publisher from Augsburg. He worked with his father-in-law, Georg Matthaeus Seutter who he succeeded him in 1756. After inheriting half the copper plates from Seutter, he set up his own publishing house in 1758. He was succeeded by his brother Andreas, his sons Matthaeus Albrecht, Georg Friedrich the elder and Gustav Conrad, and his grandsons Gabriel and Georg Friedrich the youngerShipping View Our Categories Decorative Prints World Wide Maps Scotland Maps Architecture Design England Maps Royalty About UsWe specialise in selling all items that can be considered to be Antique Paper. * PRINTS * MAPS * HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS * POSTAL HISTORY * BOOKS * POSTERS * STAMPS * POSTCARDS * EPHEMERA And anything else that is considered Antique and made of Paper.
