About this Item
Wrappers. Spine slightly worn, staples rusty and contents detaching. From the library of Derek Stanford, contributor of "Herbert Palmer: A Methodist Poet", pp.59-61, with his autograph corrections on pp.59 and 61. "With the exception of Edward Thompson, [Palmer] is the most striking modern poet to be formed by a Methodist upbringing. When I first met him in 1949, I expected the sparks would fly at our encounter. The occasion was a Poetry Society brains-trust, and the lady who organized the programme had in fact paired us as intellectual gladiators. These were the times when I championed a somewhat exclusive modernity inverse, while Herbert Palmer was every bit as adamant on traditional composition. Well, the sparks did fly, but through the glee of battle which lit the eyes of my opponent there twinkled a beam of bright understanding." Herbert Palmer was one of the poets who resigned from the Poetry Society when Muriel Spark was sacked as its General Secretary in 1948, and he contributed to the new magazine, Forum, that Spark and Stanford produced in 1949.
