Synopsis: The enormously popular JMW Turner exhibition set new benchmarks for the National Gallery of Australia. This most significant exhibition of Turner's paintings and watercolours shown in Australia for well over three decades attracted some 240,502 visitors over 87 days in Canberra and more than 180,000 visitors over 75 days in Melbourne. More than 67,000 exhibition catalogues were sold making the Turner catalogue the most successful publication ever published by the National Gallery of Australia. The 35 oil paintings, 63 watercolours and 19 prints were lent by 41 institutions and 11 private collections, significantly aided by the endeavours of Mr Evelyn Joll, the National Gallery's Turner consultant in London. Turner obtained enormous international support as a result of its ambitious intention which was not simply to celebrate Turner's art but to present new ways of looking at the artist's work. Visitor survey results revealed very high levels of awareness of the Turner Exhibition. The most effective communications for both repeat and new visitors were through print media with up to 51 per cent awareness, and through television news stories (up to 32 per cent awareness). Television advertising about the Turner Exhibition reached one in four visitors. Word of mouth promotion was also high at more than 39 per cent. Seller Inventory # ABE-1470904921046
